What is your view on this "guerilla" operation against our troops.

I have always had qualms about just permitting the Republican Guard troops take their weapons home without first surrendering and being accounted for and debriefed. A valuable source of intelligence was lost, and we have created the context for guerilla warfare which, from their perspective, would preserve their honor in the face of being utterly defeated.

As I've stated in previous posts, one of the mistakes (IMO) we are seeing is that we're not making existing Iraqi power brokers (clan leaders, ..etc) responsible for maintaining and preserving order. I don't want to see US forces performing police duties.

Let the Iraqis do that, even if it means that some unsavory characters are able to obtain power. Let THEM be responsible for easing the plight of their people and forced to seek out US assistance and advice in resolving these problems. It may require "neighborhood watch" systems to preserve local order.. Whatever it takes.

We have to get the Iraqi people back to work and being self-reliant so they stop expecting the US to work "miracles". They need to be the miracle, not us. We've opened the door for them to shape their futures in the form they desire.
