Power over Ethernet Standard Gets Go Ahead

By Richard Ball -- Electronics Weekly, 6/27/2003

The standard covering power over Ethernet has been ratified and is set to be published next month by the IEEE.

IEEE802.3af specifies -48V DC sent down the four wires not normally used in Ethernet links. Up to 15.4W can be injected into each port, which gives each peripheral around 13W to play with.

Alongside powering IP phones and Webcams, power over LAN could be used to increase the battery life of a laptop PC.

The standard demands that power fed into the LAN meets 100mV noise and ripple specifications, tighter than standard power supplies. 2,250V DC isolation is also mandated between wires.

Companies that have contributed to the standard process include 3Com, Alcatel, Avaya, Cisco, Intel, Mitel, Nortel, PowerDsine, Proxim, and Symbol Technologies.
