That is a key point.
But I would say the larger issue is the so-called 'Bush Doctrine' of *preemptive* unilateral invasion of countries that are deemed a threat to us. I believe this doctrine must be re-invented as an international doctrine; the international community must not tolerate countries that threaten world peace.
Yes, you're right. The WMD were the excuse to implement the Doctrine. As an international doctrine, it would make much better sense. At the present time, Canada is trying to 'internationalize' the Doctrine by restricting the veto nations in the UN from asserting their predominate authority in the body. I don't remember all the details but it would give the UN added legitimacy as a global governing body. Of course, the very thought sends conservatives into serious hysteria.
One immediate problem is that if the Bush Doctrine as it stands fails (as it appears destined to), it may actually increase the danger from a bigger theat: North Korea. If Iraq does turn into a quagmire, America may head back into isolationism as a defense, and allow North Korea and others to develop truly horrific and viable WMDs.
I am more worried about the effect the Iraqi war has had on the cause of the terrorists. I am concerned that their position has been strengthened in the Middle East. Time will tell.
As for N.Korea, they are dangerous but like Saddam, I think long jim [sp] is into job security. Remember, the Bush administration presents everyone as being more deadly then they really are.
This is not a partisan issue; it is an issue that affects us all equally. I personally supported Bush in the war because of assurances that Iraq posed a clear and present danger to us.
Its partisan to me only because I knew at the time that Bush was enhancing the truth re. WMD before we went to war and how unwilling conservatives were to hear it. Even now, conservatives refuse to accept that we were deceived. That's what makes it partisan for me.
However, my ultimate concern is for this country and how badly the current behavior of the Bush administration will damage us in the future.
Now that it appears we have been duped (by whom will be determined), the viability of the Bush Doctrine is questionable in its current form. Re-invented with full UN participation seems to be the only way to rescue the idea of removing threats before they reach lethal levels.
Yes, but conservatives will fight this issue to the death. I don't think the problem is exclusively the Bush Doctrine. I think part of the problem is that the conservative ideology needs to expand to truly encompass issues beyond this country. American conservatives are still fighting the Cold War except with a new type of commie in place. They are locked in a belief system that is extremely narrow and inflexible, and strongly promotes nationalism at a time when the world is becoming a much smaller place. It can't adapt to world that is changing as fast as this one; hence, the Bush Doctrine......its to make everyone in our image as quickly as possible. Then they won't have to change. However, that's not possible......the truth is they will have to change and adapt; the sooner, the better.
