Fresh off his second Canadian court victory in six weeks, Howe Street promoter John (Jack) Purdy has won a two-month delay for his second Bermuda Short money laundering trial in Miami, while his criminal defence team mulls a potential motion to dismiss the Florida indictment. At the end of a brief status conference hearing Wednesday in Miami, Mr. Purdy was granted a delay of his trial, which had been scheduled for July 14, to Sept. 15.
The Vancouver penny stock promoter, acquitted after a two-week jury trial in February in his first Bermuda Short money laundering trial, was granted an extension for his second trial, to give his lawyers time to examine RCMP disclosure documents obtained through a British Columbia Supreme Court challenge.
The adjournment, or continuation application, before United States District Court Judge Cecilia Altonaga of the Southern District of Florida, was brought by Neal Sonnett, Mr. Purdy's Miami lawyer, supported by Howard Srebnick, counsel for co-accused Ronaldo (Ron) Horvat, and opposed by Assistant United States Attorney Richard Hong. |
