There's nothing wrong with oil and cheap oil is good oil. Photovolatics, wind and nuclear energy are relatively expensive. Oil, gas, coal are still the best way of getting energy for most applications.
Oil has worked well for a century and will for another century. If demand outruns supply, people will naturally use insulation, shorter trips, ethanol from crops, Segway, photovoltaics, cyberspace and a million other solutions where it makes sense and cents.
I'm not serious that conquering oil countries is a good idea. Buying things is much better. Japan tried conquering, but after WWII found that chequebook power is much more effective.
Similarly, a revamped UN, with a federal constitution of democratic countries with elected President would be a much better solution for the USA than running around with Hellfire missiles.
But if stealing oil and being super-cop hegemonist is the aim, then the UN isn't a good way to go.
