They could also do much worse than Castro. For example, just look across the strait to Haiti, a nation that has had U.S. soldiers on its soil about 20 times in the last 100 years, doing "nation-building". Cuba could easily be where Haiti is today, with no effective health care or education system, with an ongoing AIDS plague. Castro prevented that. Objectively, measured by the conditions of life for the average person, (not that anyone is objective), Castro has done better for the Cuban people, than the governments of 20 U.S. neo-colonial states I could name.
