It always amazes me that all these articles about American Empire rarely bring up the subject of economics and affordability.

The Roman Empire ruthlessly exploited conquered provinces, extracting heavy duties and taxes. The British Empire run a substantial trade surplus, in addition to being brutally efficient -- the Foreign Office had only a few hundred staffers running half a world.

By contrast the American Empire is running a trade deficit close to 5% of GDP (more than our military budget), that would relegate any other country to banana republic status in a few short years. We depend on the kindness of our trading partners for maintenance of our Empire, and any loss of confidence will be lethal.

No empire can last long under these conditions, and those, like Kaplan, that ignore economics, and talk about the empire lasting for "decades" live in a dream world.
