"... why not attempt to give us a universal principle of conduct......and so forth"

Sorry. I don't agree with this, so I can't provide such a thing. If someone else has a good foundation for such a thing I am open to looking at it and reconsidering my position.

My thinking is that we must always use discernment and judgement with regards to our conduct. I try to keep absolute principle is at the foundation of decision making for me but not absolutes as far as prescriptive behavior or conduct. Conduct is always circumstantial and subject to the judgement of the actor.

"Are there such absolute moral principles which exist in some rarified medium awaiting our discovery and our universal acceptance? I have not heard of any."

I believe there is. Since across generations, cultures, time, and circumstances, we continue to identify the same moral principles and associating the same tags of good/bad with them.
