I rec'd "my answer" from multiple sources, leading me to draw my own conclusions. VZ-W Dir of RF Engineering for SoCal said no plans to migrate to GSM. But would he tell me such might be the case if it were true? Don't think so. Another source said such rumors have been circulating for sometime. Original source asserted info they communicated came from very high up in the VZ-W organization. At about the same time I came across an article about Nokia courting Verizon-Wireless for contract for phones with its W-CDMA chipset.

Conclusions: I question how a company like VZ-W, which has a Vodafone GSM-based operation in Europe & a VZ-W CDMA-based operation in the US, will be able to compete in each respective market with competitors that can offer a seamless GSM access to networks on both continents. IMHO, VZ-W at some point will have to "bridge" the CDMA-GSM gap that now exists b/w its US & European operating subsidiaries, that its GSM competitors don't have. I figure a cell at LAX might be an excellent test site for any "cross-breeding" that VZ-W may be wishing to incorporate at some point in the future. In retrospect, I think the better term might be "inter-operability" rather than "migration." But bottom line, there may be some truth to what I heard two weeks ago.
