If it somehow wasn't obvious, let's be clear: this thread is for sharing information and reasoned analysis on DELL. Save the personal reports about when one knew about downgrades, what one thinks of another person's posts, asking about the grandkids etc., for the other thread. Or at least always put something relevant at the beginning of a msg and move the other stuff to the bottom. (Reminders to do this can be an exception :) )

Here's some more info on Dell growth versus others:

HEADLINE: Worldwide PC Shipments Favorable April through June

BODY:
According to two US market research companies, Data Quest and International
Data, worldwide shipments of PCs during the second quarter of 1997 (April
through June) were up 16-17%. Leading the pack in terms of units shipped was
Compaq Computers. Data Quest's statistics show that the number of PCs shipped
totaled 18.9 million units, up from 16.2 million. Of the total, Compaq's
shipments increased 42% to 2.2 million units. IBM was in second place with 1.7
million units shipped. Hewlett-Packard shipped 1.04 million units, an increase
of 58% for the company. Dell Computer showed the largest jump, having
shipments which increased 61.4% to 1.01 million units. Both companies attribute
Dell's growth to the company's direct sales and low prices. In a breakdown of
where the PCs were headed, 19% were being shipped within the US, 14% were being
distributed to Asia, and 6% were going to Japan.
