But bottom line, there may be some truth to what I heard two weeks ago.

To put it mildly, I would be stunned if there was any truth to the rumour. Verizon has repeatedly stated that they have no plans to move to GSM. They have already upgraded to CDMA2000 1x and are launching 1xEV-DO in two markets during the third quarter. They will determine the extent and speed of ther roll-out of DO after they get some results from those two markets.

Also, Verizon has stated that they will be offering CDMA/GSM handsets by the end of the year. There will probably be a small premium for these types of handsets...but since the international roaming community is pretty small (and relatively wealthy), I doubt that the premium would deter users.
