It also should not be forgotten that it was Begin who stepped up to make peace with Egypt.

If Begin had indeed "stepped up" to make peace with Egypt, he could have done so in 1971. Egypt made the same offer in 1971 as in 1977. There is no record of Begin urging Israel to accept the 1971 offer, as far as I know.

But, after the disastrous 1973 war, he realized that Egypt was too much of a foe, and decided that Israel should focus its attacks on the helpless Lebanese and Palestinians.
