Maurice, how do you know that Mandarin won't be the world's universal language? I think that there are approximately as many Mandarin speakers as English speakers in this world. The grammar of Chinese is vastly easier than that of English. Have you ever tried to teach English? It's horribly illogical. (By the way there's no historical evidence that Japan ever had a tonal language, so they didn't abandon it.)

By the way you say "Modern life is causing very rapid survival of the fittest filtering." Alas that is true. Intelligence and the control of family size seem to be highly correlated. ON AVERAGE(I'd better repeat that --- ON AVERAGE) dumb people have more kids than bright people. So the fittest in a society that makes sure that everybody has enough food to go on reproducing are the dumbest. It would be amazing if the average IQ of Chinese people were NOT higher than that of Americans in 2003.
