I can do the basic calcs, except for assigning an aerodynamic drag value. I'm going to have to make some time to hunt down the flight data. Given distance traveled and initial velocity I should be able to get some estimate. No doubt it was traveling at a fairly good clip relative to the wing but if the relative speed was 500 m.p.h., I doubt it would be very visible, but I'm sure it would be highly destructive, no matter how light. The momentum is proportional to the square of the velocity so you can imagine what it can do. What I don't get is how it could have attained such a high relative velocity in such a short time. Remember Challenger? Most of the pieces stayed with the main craft a long time.
