really? then you have a better ear than I do<g> No. I should be more precise. I couldn't tell. We were travelling with someone that spoke both dialects as well as English. She could speak to another of our party (that did not speak Mandarin) in Cantonese and to locals in Mandarin. Sometimes she had no problems but a few times in some markets she had difficulty when the background noise level was high and she did not have the undivided attention of the person to whom she spoke. Personally I know a few words in Cantonese is all. I couldn't tell the difference to save my life.
