Hmmmm....
Seems to me, one of the mistakes made by the peace movement in the Vietnam War, was adopting the angry, rude, in-your-face, confrontational, belittling style you use. Why did Nixon win in 1972? Because middle-class patriotic church-going America looked at the flag-burning dope-smoking antiwar hippies, and said, "I don't like them."
This time, we're smarter. We are not ceding the flag to our prowar opponents. We don't hate our country, we don't hate the soldiers who are fighting the war. The bumper sticker on my car says "Peace is patriotic".
Majority support for the Iraq war and occupation was created by: 1. 9/11 fear 2. trust in our leaders 3. a sincere belief that the U.S. is liberating Iraq.
All these reasons can be challenged, and prowar support eroded. But not by calling people names. Even if it feels good, it's counter-productive. When posters call me "idiot", I put them on Ignore, and they've lost the opportunity to convince me of anything. |
