An Important Part Of Leading The Country Out Of This

is creating an understanding that while there are many things the government can do and many things the Fed can do in the name of making things better, and there are many things that each can do which will make things worse, that down is as much a part of the business cycle as up and there is just no getting around it.

What Greenspan has sold is a one sided coin. Unfortunately he failed to mention that one does not exist. That makes him either a fool for not knowing it doesn't exist, a charlatan for selling something that he knows doesn't exist, or a reckless megalomaniac for thinking he can create something that no one has ever been able to before and being willing to risk the wealth and security on this nation on that bet

Hard times being the other side of good times is not one of the messages that our politicians have really been good at but the current deception goes far beyond the general mendacity of political rhetoric. Telling people to take money they will be need in a few years for food, shelter, and healthcare and spend it on another SUV because it will help the economy is both cynical and cruel. Telling them to take money they will need in a few years for food, shelter, and healthcare and invest it in highly overpriced stocks represents unconscionable greed. And encouraging people to refinance their house at interest rates that are not sustainable is nothing less than stealing their house.

I personally think that the baby boomers are going to particularly vulnerable to the situation. But it doesn't seem necessary to debate who is going to suffer the most. Thanks to our “leaders” there will be more than enough suffering for everyone.

But it would be wrong to place all on the blame on the politicians and banksters. Neither could have done nearly the damage they have if people did not prefer anesthesia-induced torpor to conscious common sense. Perhaps someday people will start to realize that while it is always today, tomorrow does come. And when they do maybe they will decide to choose leaders who recognize and acknowledge that as well. But clearly denial is a river and so far the only thing people are complaining about is all the noise disturbing their dreams.

Perhaps if we did not sleep so deeply the awakenings would not have to be as rude.
