A hoop snake is like a rattler. They bask on the top of dunes and when they see something down below they bite their tail and form a hoop and roll down the hill. You only hear them rattle right before they strike, when they release their tail and fly at the victim. There used to be a bounty on them in the old days but now they are a protected species under the Wildlife Act.
