The Dems have always had the Establishment money with them.

Depends on your time frame and what you consider to be the Establishment. When the Reps were roughly Rockefeller Reps, they got lots of banking money, lots of publishing money, lots of big money. At that point, the Dems were, genuinely, the party of the people. Read William Greider's Who Will Tell the People. amazon.com

It's my impression that as the DLC, particularly Tony whatshisname, the Cal guy who took a big position in the Dem leadership in the House but got bumped on some ethics charge, as he took charge of the money raising stuff in the 80s, it began to shift. Both in terms of money sources and in terms of positions. I see the Clintons as the most recent point along that path.

My guess is that the portion of campaign dollars that come from big money and little money (whatever happened to middle money) is about even.
