Yes, part of the mess here is caused by the same issue of overspending. If the recallers have a single item that will resonate, they should move from the energy issue to the spending issue, I believe.

Typical story: when the economy was great, they ratcheted up the spending. Now, it is hard to rescind things like pay hikes, projects already built, etc.

Although I was never a proponent of Gingrich, the one thing he brought was a fervor for cutting spending. I also think it was Clinton's greatest triumph, to take that fervor, distill out some of the hateful and childish elements, and turn it into a budget that generate surpluses.

Hopefully, in the next boom, we'll remember to not assume that it will last forever. But, we seemed doomed to forget...
