It wasn't the sex play, and it wasn't the fibbing to the public. It was the fibbing to a Grand Jury. As is usually the case, it was the cover-up, not the original sin. Lying to a Grand Jury, that's a felony, plain and simple. By letting him get away with it, we reverted to the ancient UnAmerican principle of: The King is above the Law. We violated the basic American principles of equality before the law, the rule of law, and equal justice.
If Clinton had been removed from office and jailed, then maybe, just maybe, Bush wouldn't have played so fast and loose with the truth about Iraq WMD. Or maybe Powell would have done what his British counterpart did, after saying "this is bullshit" when presented with the non-evidence. And maybe, the Congress and American people would not have been scared into supporting the war, and the war wouldn't have happened. Maybe.
It's a slippery slope, letting our leaders get away with lies. First Iran-Contra, then Monica's panties, then Iraq's UnWMD. And it'll keep happening, done by Democrats and Republicans, until it gets punished. |
