Yiwu said something that jiggled a thing i've always wondered about - why do people insist on changing a name when it comes from another language, and there's no good reason for changing it? ... you could see it if the original was too hard to pronounce or something, but often that's not the case
Why do the english say Munich, when it is München? ... why do hispanos say Londres, when it's London? ... and this, i get on rants about this when down south - why do they say Canadá, cah-nah-DAH, when it's pronounced by the inhabitants Cánada, CAH-nah-dah .... i've threatened to pronounce in retaliation Mexicó, meh-hee-COH, until they smarten up, but it seems to have done little good, so far
I don't know what the 'KuK navy' is, but Max had a fair bit to do with the austrian navy, and would have had more if they hadn't sent him on a suicide mission ... he was apparently regarded as the father of the modern austrian navy, by people still in it toward the end of that century and going into 1914 ... he swung Franz Josef over to modernising, steam and ironclads, better guns, better organisation and promotion by merit, etc .... there's a lot written on this somewhere, he was building himself a big house/castle at Pola before they sent him away, and i'm pretty sure that's in Slovenia now .... interesting language there on your link, definite influence from latin
.... this used to be an investment-type thread once, didn't it? ... just recalled that, sorry, lol .... cheers |
