Remember that, at the time, Egypt got military supply and assistance from the Soviet Union and vowed support to the Palestinians (Nasserism) and the UAR (United Arab republic,...) If things turned sour for Israel then the US administration deemed it necessary for the US to jump in. However, only a casus belli with an Arab belligerent (Egypt) could be used to sway US opinion.... Bamford hints at such a devious ploy in his monograph on the NSA... there's one scathing sentence about Johnson "not giving a hoot about" the Liberty's crew.... Gus
