It's not GW's military record that bothers me. He did as much if not more than most men of his generation in that regard. However, many of those who have captured the spotlight in recent yrs as Repub Party leaders are major disappointments who avoided serving their country while acting as super patriots. Without actually being aware of their military history, it is probably no coincidence that I have always classifed many of them as too far right on the political scale for my taste. Some of them are: Newt Gingrich, Dick Armey, Bill Bennett, Pat Buchanan, the former majority leader whose hair has never been mussed?(celebrity is indeed fleeting) and last but not least Bob Dornan--that man acts as though he is the founder of the military services.
Yes, I'm aware Sen McCain's political philosophy is close to center & therefore could someday cause a switch on his part to Dem Party. Ronald Reagan did the reverse. In fact, if the Dems did not include such radicals as Jesse Jackson, Hillary Clinton, Barbara Streisand & most Hollywood celebrities, I might consider doing the same. Just cannot include myself with political far left. Of course, the Repubs have their own radicals--Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Bob Dornan, that scrawny blonde female lawyer(?), abortion clinic bombers. It's not comfortable being under the same political umbrella with them either. We need a 3rd party for those of us who are actually Centrists. |
