The subculture is very large and vocal. They are interacting with the mainstream as a legal entity and bring issues of justice to light on a regular basis. I fall short of condoning the behavior or 'life style' as a good model or even alternative model to teach children about in school. However, I think it would be just to establish legal terminology that codifies and legitimizes the relationship (either that or criminalize it). Since we are recognizing it as an acceptable life style in the legal system, I see no reason not to recognize long term partners as a 'civil union' that is able to legally inherit one anothers property and obtain benefits from employment and insurane equal to what is granted to marriage partners. I object to using the legal term 'marriage', however, because I consider that to be an agendized attack on the family centered mainstream culture. Along with legitimacy comes accountability.
