You seem to ignore the fact that Saddam might have imploded under his own weight, or the Iraqis may have revolted successfully.

Its possible but not likely. Saddam had been in power for about 30 years and before the US military moved in his power showed no signs of slipping. He had the requisite ruthlessness and the ability to exploit ethnic and regional differences to keep himself on top. If he became soft or careless then he would probably have been gone but while Saddam is many things soft and careless aren't two of them.

You are speculating again. I speculate that his gov't was ready to fall in the next 12 months and all it would have taken was a strong wind to blow. Speculation is meaningless; its one step below fantasy.

And if he did get bumped off by some coup or revolution in 10 years, 10 more years of Saddam + sanctions would have caused a lot more suffering and death then the war did. Or do you think it likely that Saddam would have lost power, without any foreign military attack against him, within a year or two?

The USSR was, in some ways, more ruthless than Saddam. Who would have thought that economics would have brought them to their knees and caused their collapse? Its clear now that we are in Iraq that economics were causing serious problems for Saddam. Who can predict what would have happened to him a short way down the road?

This war was not a police action....it was someone sticking their nose into a situation because they didn't like the looks of the owner. In situations like that, its not unusual for the busy body to get his/her nose cut off.
