Well, during the war, people were encouraged to NOT critcize Russia. And immediately after the war, Patton was villified for saying we needed to attack the Russians. Yes, strange bedfellows. But it certainly changed from an environment of at least tolerance to one of abject hatred, so much so that anyone even remotely associated with the Communists were blackballed and ruined.
