The National Education Association, a powerful force as the largest union in the country, has settled on campaign targets: No Child Left Behind, the sweeping school law championed by President Bush

Oh, "Make my day!" The polls consistently show that people are 80% or better behind school testing. The Unions don't want anything that can measure the school's performance. This is easy for the conservatives to go up against.

As you all can tell, I am very pessimistic about school reform. John's arguments are exactly those of the School Bureaucracy. "Give us more teachers and money and we will solve the problem." Unfortunately, any additional money gets sucked up by raises for the teachers and the administrators, and the schools continue to decline. We just saw this with Pataki's sellout to the teachers in NY.

The Teacher's Union militancy may eventually backfire on them. Right now, the polls show that people still back the Teachers, but I think this is changing.
