fairness compels me to point out that Bearden, while a serious regional expert with unparalleled experience in Central Asian skullduggery, was a lousy guide to events in Afghanistan in the fall of 01 and after. He wrote an article for FA (which also appeared in its 9/11 collection) that predicted all sorts of trouble for the US if it took on the Taliban directly, suggested we'd get bogged down there, etc. So-before I'd take his new criticisms very seriously, I'd want to see some retractions, or at least good explanations, of his old criticisms first. The moral, btw, is not that Bearden can or can't be trusted, but rather that even true experts can make faulty predictions....
