Hi LindyBill; Re: "Yeah, they have to rotate the 3rd ID out of there."

If you think the US military is complaining now about being in Iraq for 3 months, wait till you see what they have to say about being there on 11 month rotations.

The problem is that without the draft, we simply do not have enough soldiers to keep the place under control. So the ones that are there are in an impossible position.

If our commanders beef up detachment sizes, it will stop most ambushes, but it will greatly reduce the amount of territory that we "control". The problem is that the uncontrolled areas will end up with defacto rebel governments, and support guerilla forces against the controlled areas.

For the combat elite, this is a nightmare situation. There just aren't enough of them to allow them to be rotated out, without severely impacting the war. And their duties in country aren't exactly what they trained for. But as far as surviving ambushes, they are the best, and other forces would take higher casualties. So we leave them in the field for too long, and they just have to stick it out.

As long as they're in the military most of them will keep their mouths shut. But as they leave, they will have some nasty opinions to share about Bush's competence.
