The initial cases of bird flu almost certainly were the bird flu, which is influenza. It was just a coincidence with SARS, although both are seasonal and probably emerge at about the same time (and one may be a cofactor for the other).

The 1918 flu epidemic initially was not severe, but re-emerged with a vengeance in the fall/winter. The stage is set for a similar situation with SARS, which would require a re-emergence from humans infected with the mutated virus, not another animal to human jump.
