The money going into Egypt from where? Weren't we basically paying off the Egyptians to keep them out of any future moves against Israel? If anything, the Egyptians got money to match what was going to Israel.

I believe most of our money ended back here to pay for the military purchases.

Yes, we managed to simultaneously subsidize the Israeli military and the American arms industry. I'm not sure that this was a great idea from the taxpayer's perspective, but that perspective has not generally been much of a concern.

I suspect that the traditional Israeli truculence might have been muted somewhat if it had been made clear that American aid could not be taken for granted.
