====================================================================== Reduces Software Development Time, Part Count, and Implementation Cost
MILPITAS, Calif., Aug. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Representing the highest level of integration available, LSI Logic Corporation (NYSE:LSI) today introduced the first self-tuning single chip Digital Broadcast Satellite (DBS) receiver for set-top boxes and satellite PC applications. With its on-chip microcontroller, the single chip reduces software development by 70%. Designated the L64724, this self-tuning chip enables the fastest channel changing and electronic program guides (EPG) in today's market. The chip is the newest member of LSI Logic's INTEGRA(TM) product family -- the most complete set-top box solution available. It is the latest in a series of highly successful set-top box products from LSI Logic. "LSI Logic worked very closely with leaders in the set-top box industry, to develop this flexible solution which solves many system level problems," said Amnon Fisher, vice president and general manager, LSI Logic Consumer Group. "By simplifying the design and reducing the load on the embedded host CPU, set-top box manufacturers are able to add value in areas such as channel changing speed and EPG performance." The L64724 includes on-chip decimation filters, which allow for truly continuous operation between 1-90 Mbits/sec. This leadership implementation permits the same receiver design to meet the needs of both consumer services, such as the DISH Network or DirecTV, as well as single carrier per channel (SCPC) applications, targeting news gathering services or data and video transmissions within an organization, without switching board components. "Echostar has chosen to continue its successful relationship with LSI Logic by designing the company's latest DBS chip into our newest set-top box," said Mark Jackson, vice president of engineering for Echostar. "The receiver's ability to continuously operate between 1-90 Mbits/sec allows Echostar to use the chip in our consumer boxes for the DISH Network, as well as a new generation of boxes targeting low bit rate SCPC business applications and variable bit rate applications in Europe. Furthermore, the on-chip analog-to-digital converters reduced our receiver's cost and simplified the board layout." The L64724 combines a DVB/DSS compliant QPSK demodulator, forward error correction, six-bit analog-to-digital converters and a microcontroller onto a single chip. The unique on-chip controller controls the tuner, as well as all channel acquisition and tracking functions, allowing for the elimination of interaction with the CPU. Programmable DSS and DVB modes of operation enable a single chip receiver design solution which addresses the entire DBS market. The need for software development by the set-top box manufacturer is greatly reduced by inclusion of sample code along with the chip. LSI Logic's INTEGRA chip set is the most advanced and most cost effective solution in the industry. A complete set-top box kit which includes the L64724, L64008 MIPs-based Transport Demux, and the L64005 MPEG A/V Decoder is presently available. The L64724 is priced under $10 in quantities of 100,000, as part of the INTEGRA kit.
