Air Canada is intending a significant aircraft order from Bombardier. On June 19, Air Canada issued a press release entitled "Air Canada Provides Update on Restructuring"

One of the items listed as a "key component" of their restructuring plan was, "Raising financing to obtain new 55 to 110-seat aircraft in future years at an estimated capital cost of over $4 billion"

IOW, Air Canada recognizes a need to replace aircraft at the regional end of their operations. My guess is that they will phase out the BAe 146-200s (they have 10 - expensive to maintain so few aging aircraft in a fleet) used on some routes, and they will probably replace the older Dash-8 turboprops because they are detested by fliers because of the incredible interior noise on takeoff and the many squeaks and rattles.

In the 50+ seat range, I expect that Air Canada will expand its fleet of Bombardier RJ series jets - the proven RJ200 series seats 50, and at the other end of the range the new RJ900 seats 86 to 90 people.

If AC chooses to replace some of their aging turboprops, I expect they will purchase the Q300 (50-56 seat) or Q400 series (68-78 seat).

By my count, Air Canada currently flies 60 RJs and 72 DASH-8s in various configurations.

For political reasons, it seems suicidal that Air Canada would purchase Regional jets from from any source but Bombardier.

Cheers, Reflex

Disclosure: I own Bombardier stock.
