HIGH-LEVEL IT TEAM TO VISIT ISRAEL

Tata Industries managing director and Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) telecom council chairman Kishor Chaukar will lead a delegation of high-tech Indian executives to Israel this weekend. The mission, comprising representatives 15 largest high-tech companies, is being hosted by the Israel Export Institute and the Indian embassy in Israel.

Among the Indian companies participating are cellular companies Spice Communications and BPL, land-based communications company Tata Teleservices, and and internet firm Net4India. They will be interacting with officials from Israeli organisations like Comverse Technology (Nasdaq: CMVT), AudioCodes (Nas-daq: AUDC), Alvarion (Nasdaq: ALVR), and MRV Communications (Nasdaq: MRVC).

They will also meet the representatives of venture capital funds such as Apax Partners (Israel), Vertex Management Israel, Deloitte and Touche, and Jerusalem Venture Partners (JVP). Members of the delegation told FE, "this visit will primarily concentrate on improving productivity of telecom networks and opportunities in value added services."

Another member of the delegation Jasjit Sawhney, CEO and managing director of Net4india said, "After the US, the greatest number of telecom companies listed on the Nasdaq are from Israel. As far as the telecom technology is concerned, Israel is considered to be the best." He also said, "Net4India has a tie up with Israeli internet telephony company - Delta Three."

Israel was a leader in internet protocol (IP) and during the visit we would like to meet potential partners and vendors, he added. "The key focus is on business opportunities. We believe there is scope for cooperation with Israel companies and we are going with an open mind," said Umang Das, managing director Spice Communications.

The Israel Export and International Cooperation Institute has predicted that Israeli high-tech exports to India will grow 20 per cent to $ 120 million this year which include exports by 100 Israeli companies. Israel Export Institute deputy director-general and high-tech division director Yair Ofek has said that India is considered an emerging communications market, with an information technology industry-wide turnover of over $ 10 billion in 2002. The Indian market, therefore, has a huge potential for Israeli exports. A reciprocal delegation of Israeli communications companies is due to visit India in November this year. ######
