I think VLSI has it very wrong.....There is plenty of fab
capacity up thru 0.13u. What exactly will drive this huge
demand that VLSI is predicting. There is really no new
"must have" technology that will benefit from smaller device sizes at this time. Everything in the sub-0.13u
range will be specialty/prototypes/pilot line
devices. The technology is still new, yields are not
optimized and I suspect that there really isn't much direct
demand.....Again, it is a question of necessity vs "nice to
have". My argument is that it is still cheaper to produce
devices >/= 0.13u and many technologies and end product manufacturers simply don't have the immediate need nor are willing to pay higher prices for unnecessary new technology. The technology is way ahead of the consumer demand cycle and it will take at least 2-3 years before demand catches up with the capabilities of the newer technology. BB
