It's actually the opposite. While BETA may have been a better and clearer system, it also initially didn't allow long recording times, as VHS did. The longer recording time per tape is what made VHS the standard of choice.

The parallel in the case of GSM and CDMA is that CDMA uses the same amount of spectrum more efficiently (i.e., a longer recording time) and therefore is the lower cost, preferred alternative.
