Top Research Institution Chooses the BeadLab Solution from Illumina; Illumina's BeadArray-TM- Technology Will Be Key In The Institution's Charter to Advance Pharmacogenomics

Businesswire, Tuesday, July 08, 2003 at 06:01

SAN DIEGO, Jul 8, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Illumina, Inc. (Nasdaq: ILMN) announced today an agreement with an undisclosed research institution for the purchase of Illumina's BeadLab, a production-scale SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) genotyping laboratory. The BeadLab will be used for large-scale genotyping projects that will provide the fundamental DNA information necessary to transform genetic research into clinical medicine.

The genotyping laboratory solution is built around Illumina's proprietary BeadArray technology and features high sample throughput from unprecedented multiplex levels. The multiplex levels combined with the BeadLab's integrated, automated laboratory solution generates low running cost per SNP scored. The complete offering is fully integrated to ensure optimal SNP genotyping performance. Included in the turnkey offering are the BeadArray Reader, GoldenGate(TM) assay reagents and protocols, LIMS and analytical software, fluid-handling robotics, and access to Sentrix(TM) Array Matrices, along with installation, start-up, training, and support services.

According to Jay Flatley, Illumina President and CEO,"The order for this fourth BeadLab system is a great achievement for Illumina. We are now working closely with a growing number of leading, international genomics institutions. We're excited to see these thought leaders adopt our technology in their efforts to understand the role of genetic factors in human health and disease."Additional information about the agreement will be provided following installation of the BeadLab.

Illumina (www.illumina.com) is developing next-generation tools that permit large-scale analysis of genetic variation and function. The Company's proprietary BeadArray(TM) technology provides the throughput, cost effectiveness and flexibility to enable researchers in the life sciences and pharmaceutical industries to perform the billions of tests necessary to extract medically valuable information from advances in genomics and proteomics. This information will help pave the way to personalized medicine."Safe Harbor"Statement under the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995: this release may contain forward-looking statements that involve risks and uncertainties.
