Hi jpg,

Hope your vacation is great. Tip one or two for me.

So far my rehab has been focused on the upper & lower
muscles of my leg. For the first three weeks of rehab the
only exercise that made me bend my knee was on the
stationary bike for 10 minutes with no resistance. During
week four they added one more exercise that makes me bend
my knee.... a leg lift set at 20 lbs. - 3 sets of ten.

I asked why I'm not doing exercises to increase the
muscles around my knee & the therapist said I was doing a
program designed precisely for the type of surgery & extent
of injury I had. Since neither my surgeon nor my therapist
will give me a straight answer about the prognosis of any
type of recovery, I'm beginning to doubt the prognosis is
good.

As I said, I had an extensive meniscus tear that had been
ground to shreds during my 3 1/2 year fight with Workman's
Comp. During that time the torn meniscus cut into knee
carteliege. The surgeon had to cut more cartilage to smooth
out the grooves so that there was a smooth surface in there
once again. If not more surgery would be needed (as my knee
would have shaved the high points down, perhaps causing
even more damage from the newly created cartilage spurs).

It's been more than a month now & I can't walk 25 feet
without pain. If I sit in a straight chair for more than an
hour, my knee swells & stiffens making it painful just
standing up. And walking up or down steps is worse now than
before.

Another problem that lingers since surgery is nearly
constant lower back pain. The night after surgery I woke up
with constant searing pain at the bottom of my spine.
Nothing I did lessened the pain, even doubling up on the
pain medication. My therapist & surgeon called
it 'positional', I.E., while I was on the table during the
2+ hours of surgery, the narrow, hard table & my limp lower
half (had a spinal) may have caused a 'temporary' strain.

Well after 4+ weeks, I don't think it's temporary. I have
an appointment to see my physician Fri.

Oh well, enough bitching & moaning. I'm even starting to
bum myself out :-(

Tim
