I looked through your bristlecone link (thanks for posting it) and saw that some idiot grad student, back in the 1960's, cut down what was then the oldest living tree on earth (it was almost 5,000 years old and located in what is now Nevada's Great Basin National Park). I've spent time in the high country of NV and CA and can attest from first hand experience that these trees are truly amazing to see up close...
