Have you read Michael Oren's account of the Liberty? If you haven't read Six Days of War, you definitely should, it's an excellent book. Oren found evidence that somebody miscalculated the Liberty's speed, and on the basis of the miscalculation got it into their heads that it was an Egyptian ship.

It's human nature to believe that he who harms you, does so deliberately. I always take "but he MUST have seen me" arguments with a grain of salt. We all know from our own experience how easy it is to miss objects in plain view, and that doesn't take the strain and fatigue of combat into account.

All these conspiracy theories don't pass the laugh test imo. Israel would have needed a helluva motive to sink an American ship, and not even the conspiracy nuts have thought up anything plausible. If Israel had decided to sink the ship and kill the crew, they would have done so, not change their minds halfway and start offering assistance. To think that everybody on the radio, surface and air, could have been briefed to carry out a ruse is simply unbelievable, especially now that we have the NSA tapes.
