Is there a way to tell the system to never monitor a portable drive?

What happens is that I now tell it do it if I remember. I plug it in sporadically and forget to take it off. If I do a system restore while it's plugged in, I get the problem that several have posted about, i.e., I lose all the restore points because there is not enough room on the portable drive.
