Some observations on the latest poll.

While Bush's overall approval is still comfortably above 50%, the drop in the last couple of weeks is very steep.

Approval for Bush's economy handling is below 50%. It's the war on terrorism and Iraq that are saving Bush. If he can't sustain that, or if the unemployment doesn't improve by mid 2004, he will be very vulnerable.

An astonishing 80% are fearing a quagmire in Iraq -- what a contrast compared to the FADG conservative regulars. I wonder what will happen to the Bush foreign affairs approval, if that transpires.

My conclusion is that Rove should be thinking hard about how to defuse Iraq as an issue by election time next year. A very tough situation, considering that the Iraq policy is driven by ideologues who don't care very much about politics.
