Glenn,

Here's another dictionary that I find to be most useful:

onelook.com

Take a peek at the R.H. side. The first 'quick definition' provides the crux: (candid) adjective: starkly realistic

While Rall is starkly realistic, Krauthammer was closer to to being honest than usual in yesterday's column.

His assertion, ". For liberals, foreign policy is social work. National interest -- i.e., national selfishness -- is a taint", comes much closer than he usually does to telling the truth. We invaded Iraq for the sake of greed. Not on the part of the American public, of course. (They are merely fed a pabulum of silly patriotic homilies.)But in order to satisfy the greed of the highest echelons of Halliburton, Bechtel and the Repuglican Party.

Krauthammer sums up the situation nicely, if you read between the lines. 'There's no rake-off for the plutocrats in Liberia,' he says under his breath. 'So why should we bother to fool anyone that we are a benign nation? Nothing could be further from the truth. We have to stick to exploitation, that's what has made this country great!'
