Mish's Housekeeping Tip O'The Day

In multiple parts.

If you have a beautiful shiny granite countertop and island and someone tells you or your wife it needs to be sealed you may wish to consider the following.

1) Do not ask Home Depot what to use.
2) It was nice and shiny and probably did not need to have anything done to it, but after the wife followed thru on a friend's advice with the crap recommended by HD, there was a grey bumpy film over it.
3) Do not attempt to sand out fallen hairs that are trapped in the sealed goo on the counter and island (my wife attempted this and fortunately the goo was so thick it did not damage the real surface
4) whatever gunk Home deopo recommended it was the wrong stuff. I went to the actual granite/stone place that made the tops and they told me what to use. (expensive as heck)
5) First you have to remove the gunk. The guy at the granite place said to use acetone. It works but if you messed up as badly as (well I do not want to point any more fingers) then do not think a quart will be enough. 3 trips to home depot to buy acetone just might do it. first a quart then a gallon then another gallon which we will not completely use up. I might have used stripper but I used what the guy said. It evaporates very fast.
6) If you panicked during the Iraq war and bought a gas mask this is a perfect use for it. If I end up in the hospital with acetone poisoning do not be surprised.
7) If you did not buy a gas mask, open the windows and set up some cross ventillation with a fan.
8) After you strip off all the gunk, apply a very thin coat of the right stuff with a paper towel then wipe it all off with a clean paper towel. You might want to do this twice.
9) If all the gunk is removed and step nine is properly done, your counter tops MAY look ALMOST as good as they did before a friend had your wife do the mandatory sealing with the crap recommended by Home Depot.

Tip of the day summarized in one sentence: If you have a nice shiny granite countertop and someone tells you it needs to be sealed, either do not do it (recommended) or make sure you are using the right stuff applied properly if you do, otherwise it will take you 10 times as long and cost 5 times as much.

This concludes this important public service announcement.
