beginning to think that the most important reason for opposing this war is because of what it does to American civil society

This society has been mainline hypoed with fear, since 9-11. Every time anyone has tried to oppose the Bush agenda on anything, the characteristic response has been to 1) hype the fear factor, and then 2) brand the opposer as unpatriotic. Apparently the theory is with sufficient fear and patriotism, anything on the agenda is possible.
