I didn't say that the Iraq war was political. But I think Bush believed the Neocon line on Iraq. Iraq did wonders for Bush's popularity initially -- from 53% before the war his approval rating shot up to more than 80% after the war started. It may turn out to be a political miscalculation, but at the time the decision was made, it clearly did not hurt Bush politically. And by every indication Bush believed it would help him.
