I looked up a URL on Liberia. Can sum it up in one word, prim-at-tive.
No AM radio stations, 2 airports with paved runways, parts of rail lines sold for scrap.

Seems there are far more reasons to go there than stay away. Gives us a position to monitor which other country in the area may become a terrorist hideaway (money would speak loudly there).
It is in the US tradition and image to try to support impoverished or desperate people.
Not much hazard as a trap, with Taylor gone the country is practically leaderless, so no commitments needed except what the US promises to try to do.
Might be good to go as part of a UN team, show we can play as a team player
