The scale of operations, and the resulting bills, would be radically smaller in Liberia than in Iraq ... as i see logical development of the situation, anyway ... which would be, send in a smallish highly mobile air cavalry force, to back up a somewhat larger force of a few hundreds whose function would be basically policing a small area to start ... and from day one, put the word out to your pre-Iraq-dementia allies that you are again open to reasonable discourse on such matters, and you could maybe use a little help with them
This would be subject to the wishes of liberians themselves, of course ... maybe they won't want brits in there, or french or danes or something .... but without having heard anything on their attitudes regarding others, this would be the first road i'd check out ... and in any case, there is Ecowas to work with, the brits have expertise with them and have found them useful at times, competent within limits, probably an organisation that could be improved upon
Liberia could in this way cut the Iraq bill, if played right ... wouldn't hurt to make an abject apology for actions so far on Iraq, but that would take a lot of political courage, probably not gonna happen ... but the return of a genuine diplomacy in place of the my way or the highway approach, this could work wonders, and have wider benefits .... consider - the neocons could use a little help in Iraq, now that they've got themselves in this mess, and the independent democracies are sitting back saying no way, we don't want anything to do with that act, until they smarten t.f.u. ... if and when they re-learned the art of listening however, millions here would support canuck forces helping as police, red-coated mounties and all if the locals appreciated that sort of thing |
