Since there isn't anything to weigh or measure in this debate, we can see that what is being debated is presuppositions about the nature of reality. If we want to apply science to evolution we could set up a test for it. This may not be practical if mutations are unpredictable and rare. There are no tests of evolutionary theory in the fashion that there have been tests of relativity theory, at least that I am aware of. So you get to choose which story you like best.
